Scarce commemorative medal issued for the inauguration of the NATO Missile Firing Installation (NAMFI / Πεδίον Βολής Κρήτης) in Crete on 17 May 1968.
The obverse displays the historic NAMFI / Crete Firing Range emblem, incorporating a missile, the NATO compass rose and the Cretan wild goat, with the Greek inscription ΠΕΔΙΟΝ ΒΟΛΗΣ ΚΡΗΤΗΣ.
The reverse carries the English inscription:
INAUGURATION CEREMONY
CRETE – GREECE
MAY 17, 1968
NAMFI was constructed in the Akrotiri area of Chania between 1964 and 1968 as a NATO training facility for air-defence missile systems. The original multinational agreement involved Belgium, France, West Germany, Denmark, Greece, Norway, the Netherlands and the United States.
An especially interesting Cold War-era Greek military medal connected directly with the establishment of one of NATO’s most important missile training installations.
The photographs shown are the actual medal offered for sale, not stock images.
