The Britannia is a British gold coin, first minted by The Royal Mint in 1987, at which time it was the first gold bullion coin in Europe. The Britannia platinum coin is denominated in pounds sterling. In Great Britain it is the official means of payment. The precious metal content of the Gold Britannia has been 999.9 since 2013. Before that, it was listed as 916.7 – which corresponds to 22 carats. Until 1989, a twelfth of copper was used as an alloy, giving the coin a reddish hue. After that, copper and silver were used in the same proportions.
With the year of issue 2021, the classic design of Philip Nathan’s Britannia gold coin has been supplemented with new design elements and security features called “Bullion Security”. These security elements, which were initially seen on the gold and silver editions of the bullion coin, are also found on the platinum editions of the coin for the first time this year.
