Original Franklin Mint sterling silver Proof medal from the celebrated The Genius of Michelangelo collection, featuring “Creation of the Sun and Moon”, inspired by Michelangelo’s renowned fresco from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
The medal depicts God the Creator in a highly dynamic composition associated with the creation of the sun and moon. The scene is one of the best-known episodes from Michelangelo’s Genesis cycle in the Sistine Chapel.
The reverse features the distinctive geometric web design used throughout the series, centered by a small portrait of Michelangelo, together with the inscription:
“Creation of the Sun and Moon – As the Lord flings into orbit shining sun and a chilled moon.”
The design is signed P. Monassi.
This issue forms part of the 60-medal Genius of Michelangelo series, with Creation of the Sun and Moon catalogued as No. 11. Contemporary numismatic reporting confirms that this subject was among the medals announced for the series beginning in 1970, struck in sterling silver at approximately 44 mm.
This example displays particularly attractive blue, violet, grey and golden natural toning, especially across the geometric reverse and around the outer fields. The pictorial side also shows strong original patina with light surface and storage marks visible under magnification.
