Original Franklin Mint sterling silver Proof medal from the celebrated The Genius of Michelangelo collection, featuring The Prophet Jeremiah, inspired by Michelangelo’s fresco from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
The medal depicts Jeremiah seated in contemplation and mourning, with two accompanying figures in the background. The reverse features the distinctive geometric pattern used throughout the series, with a small portrait of Michelangelo at the center.
The inscription reads:
“The Prophet Jeremiah – They heeded not when he warned the wicked and told Jerusalem’s fall.”
This issue was produced by Franklin Mint as part of the 60-medal Genius of Michelangelo series. Numista records the type in .925 sterling silver, approximately 41.08g, 45 mm diameter, and attributes the design to Italian engraver Piero Monassi. A 2026 auction listing for the same issue gives a closely comparable specification of 41.08 g and 44 mm.
This example displays attractive blue-grey, golden and darker natural toning, especially across the upper fields and around the rim. Light hairlines and surface/storage marks are visible under magnification.
